Is Technology Going Backwards? There’s little that hasn’t changed but something quite important that hasn’t. The operating system! Windows XP has been around for a good eight years now yet the majority of businesses still use it. On the one hand it’s safe, secure and much more stable some would argue. But is it really better?

I wake with the alarm at 07:00. I lay there for a few minutes reflecting on the events of yesterday and the generosity of everybody in all of our locations in regards to gifts and cakes I received to celebrate my birthday. Guess what… It’s my birthday (!) and I get up at 04:15am to ensure I make the day last as long as possible! We have a 07:20 flight from Heathrow to Paris Charles de Gaulle followed by a notoriously difficult and busy drive across Paris to our offices in Vélizy. I catch up with Stuart in the BA lounge. I start by telling him how miserable the British Airways attendant is on the front desk of the lounge. I know it’s early but it is early for everyone – she could have at least replied when I said ‘good morning’ and made an attempt at a smile

As we all know, mobile technology has evolved dramatically over the years. Just ten years ago saw us being amazed by ‘Snake’ on the Nokia 3210! Now, we can browse the internet, get directions using GPS and even check whether something is straight with a virtual spirit level (I can’t say I’ve had any need for this one, its far cheaper and much more practical from the local DIY store).

Day 8 – Sheffield/Manchester. My wife and I had managed to get out for dinner on Wednesday evening and went to our local Indian restaurant ‘Dine Bangla’. ‘Hello Mr. Richardson, so you are back in the country then, nice to see you out with Mrs Richardson!’

My wife’s last three visits to the restaurant had been without me – twice with our children, once with her girlfriends. ‘Thanks Akbar,’ I said, rolling my eyes. Even the restaurant owner knows I haven’t been around much lately.

I set the alarm last night after returning home from Madrid but I didn’t turn it on. I am now over an hour late. I normally get up at 05:00 when I am working in the UK, and aim to leave my house by 05:45 to miss the morning traffic.
